OVERVIEW
Cotton Cube is a concept mobile app geared toward organizing, decluttering, and being conscious of what is in their closet. The app aimed to discover how a person organizes a closet and solve the problems that are associated with it. With the initial step of user research and market analysis, a wireframe of the application was constructed.
RESEARCH
The initial step of creating a concept app was to first understand what problem needed to be solved. That problem was; How does someone organize a closet? Interviewing people to understand how they go through the process of cleaning out a closet or how someone would organize it.
Conducting interviews with people was the main source of research used to gather feedback on how people try to solve this problem. When conducting interviews, the goal was to not only know a person’s process for organizing a closet but to also know what issues they encounter along the way. When conducting interviews, it was important to find out what they personally have issues with when they are organizing or what is potentially preventing them. Some summary points from those interviews are listed below.
People usually have an idea of how they would like to organize a closet, but don’t know where to start. This is could be due to the overwhelming amount of things that need to be organized
Not many people are not concerned about tracking the price of their clothing for potential resell and
They did not know where to sell or donate their used clothing but are interested in the idea of getting money for those sold or donated items.
They were interested in storing items that will help them better organize, as well as discarding items that are not needed.
Everyone had a closet they would like to better organize, and many had multiple closets that needed organization.
Many don’t organize a closet or don’t have a process.
MARKET ANALYSIS
There is a multitude of closet applications within the marketplace. The majority of current applications are not focused on solving the issue of how to organize. These apps are used to document fashion within the closet for resale or are used to track specific item details on items. Some are used to create an outfit through the documented items.
With the extensive amount of app, only two apps were compared to see how they are useful in solving the organization problem. From those two applications, their pros and cons were evaluated.
Closet+
All in one closet organizer
Complicated to understand
Didn’t have gender focused user
Slow process of uploading items to the app.
Mod Man
Useful for fashion ideas and tracking closet items
Fast upload of photos to closet as items
Intended for one gender
DESIGN + DEVELOP
Creating a concept app that solves a problem takes an understanding of that problem from a user perspective as well as knowing what current applications on the market are doing to combat that issue. Cotton Cube aims to solve issues that come with organizing a closet. The wireframe of the concept application aims to solve those issues through the process, organization options, locating resources, and inspiring ideas. The wireframe was structured to include an initial setup as well as four tabs to navigate the app. The Launch and Walkthrough were the initial steps of setting up the application for the organization of a closet. The Closet, Organize, Ideas, and Settings tabs are used to navigate the app and its multiple features.
NEXT STEPS
The next steps to be taken in completing the user experience study would be to create a useable prototype, then testing the prototype on users. Gathering feedback from those tests, making changes, and repeating the process to accomplish a user-focused concept application.
